Over 2000 years ago the Chinese realised that the sedentary lifestyle of their beurocrats was not only damaging their health, it was also making them less efficient. They also worked out that the fundamental of all human life was breath.
Chi (or vital energy, prana) - the secret of good health
You can go without food for 5 or 6 weeks. Without sleep for maybe 5 to 6 days. You can go without water for almost the same but you can't go without air for more than 4 minutes. Oxygen is the fundamental to every process in the body.
As important as nutrition is, there have been recent experiments that demonstrate that cells respond more to neuro peptides (emotional chemicals) generated by the hypothalmus than they do to nutrition . We probably all know of someone who has lived their entire life on sardines (or whatever) and worked hard into their 70s. The secret was not the work (although you don't get much of an opportunity to think about yourself or anything else when you're hard at work) - it was the fact that to do that work they had to take in lots of OXYGEN and because the arms were usually busy they had to breathe using their diaphragms. Yes, its a generalization, but its also an illustration.
And there's more. Experiments using an endoscope have shown that when breathing diaphragmatically we drain our lymph system (the body's sewage). This is why we breathe diaphragmatically when sleeping. It is our body's way of draining off the waste products of our wonderful bodies.
According to the ancient Chinese and behind the proven techniques of Acupuncture and Shiatsu, it is evident that we have channels or pathways where intrinsic energy flows around our body. This energy passes through our main organs and the thinking behind these schools is that blockages to the energy flow is what eventually causes ill health. Acupuncture and acupressure clear these blockages thus promoting good health.
Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Cultural Breathing seek to awaken our storehouse of Chi energy (the Tan T'ien or Prana is about 3 inches below our navel and the same in) and have Chi circulate throughout our channels, thereby promoting robust health. Chi energy is the same energy that runs the universe - a duallistic (Yin/Yang) idea of opposing forces keeping things from flying apart. There is much scientific evidence for this - too much to go into now but if you ever meet a long term exponent of Tai Chi or Chi Gung and ask them about Chi, you will hear that some major benefit to their lives has occurred through cultivating it.
Another aspect to generating the circulation of Chi is that it creates a great deal of heat. It is believed that this heat eventually melts the marrow in our bones and when this re-solidifies it 'tempers' our bones. Long term exponents rarely have any arthritis, osteoperosis or similar bone diseases. I have seen photgraphic evidence of hardwoods being broken over the bones of a (much practised) Chi breathing exponent.
A further dimension is energy. Caffeine and simple carbs (sugars) give you energy but aren't good for you in more than very small doses, so imagine how good it would be to get your energy from breathing!
The ancient Chinese worked out that, even then, some people were living sedentary lives and this was not in the best interest of their health. Therefore, in the space of 2 square metres they devised 10 exercises using the principles of Tai Chi and deep diaphragmatic breathing to create robust internal and external health along with a sublime feeling of well-being.
The fact that the inhalations and exhalations must be in sync with the movements and that the movements need to be flowing and accurate creates a perfect situation for a meditative state so the mind gains some freedom and can clear. You cannot think of much else when doing these exercises.
Imagine being able to close your office door, put a Do Not Disturb sign up, clear a space of 6 feet square and 20 minutes later feel better than you have for years!
The 10 treasures will;
